Özet

This study aims to develop a practice-oriented pedagogical design proposal for B2-level Arabic critical reading, drawing on Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) framework. It is designed as a qualitative document-analysis- informed pedagogical design study. Rather than reporting an empirical classroom intervention or a representative corpus analysis, the study uses one selected Anadolu Agency Arabic news excerpt as an illustrative pedagogical case. The news excerpt is analyzed not merely as a neutral structure conveying information, but as a discursive practice that frames events, positions actors, distributes responsibility, and constructs meaning through linguistic choices. The excerpt is examined at the macro level in terms of headline, lead, theme, and summarization strategies, and at the micro level in terms of actor presentation, agency and responsibility, quotation and evidence strategies, modality, and evaluative language. The analysis provides a pedagogical example of how discursive structures in the news text can be transformed into classroom-based critical reading tasks. Based on this single-text analysis, an integrated instructional package prototype comprising a coding form, worksheets, an alignment matrix, and a rubric is developed for use in Arabic instruction. The study thus offers a classroom-oriented model for supporting critical literacy in B2-level Arabic news reading. More specifically, the study positions its contribution
at the intersection of Arabic news reading, B2-level proficiency, and CEFR-oriented critical reading pedagogy. It links van Dijk’s CDA categories to Arabic-specific linguistic and discourse features, including agency backgrounding, passive constructions, nominalization, modality markers, evaluative lexis, metaphorical intensification, and
institutional quotation patterns. The selected news excerpt is used as an illustrative case; therefore, the proposed framework can be transferred to other structurally rich Arabic news texts.
