Abstract

It is possible to say that the short story, which has examples in various forms dating back hundreds of years, emerged as an independent genre in Arabic literature in the modern sense starting from the 20th century. Egypt, nourished by its rich literary infrastructure from history, became one of the countries where the first examples of this genre were seen. Yusuf Idris, considered one of the most important writers of Egypt, came to the fore in the field of short stories. The author, who included the economic, political and cultural problems and conflicts experienced by the Egyptian people in his works, made great efforts to create a literature specific to Egypt. The subject of this study, a short story called A Table from the Sky (طبلية من السماء), is one of the seven short stories in the collection A Matter of Honor (حادثة شرف) published by Yusuf Idris in 1958. The story revolves around Sheikh Ali, who lives in a town called Munyetu'n-Nasr. The short story is told from an observer's point of view and the time when the story takes place is not specified. The story, which is dominated by fluent Arabic, uses a familiar language. The reader is drawn into the story thanks to the frequent dialogues.
