AN ANALYSIS OF ORHAN PAMUK’S “BEYAZ KALE” IN ENGLISH TRANSLATION BY VICTORIA ROWE HOLBROOK IN TERMS OF TARGET ORIENTED APPROACH

Abstract

Orhan Pamuk, awarded Nobel Prize in Literature, is an author whose books were translated into sixty three languages. In this study, the English translation of Orhan Pamuk’s “Beyaz Kale”, “The White Castle”translated by Victoria Rowe Holbrook was analyzed in terms of Target Oriented Approach of Gideon Toury. Document analysis as the data collection method was used in this study which had been designed by qualitative research method. The data were analyzed by descriptive analysis technique. A total of thirteen text units were selected as a result of the collected data and analyzed in accordance with “adequacy”, “acceptability” and “norms” in the light of the approach concerned. When the findings obtained in consequence of this study was assessed, it was concluded that the translator did an “adequate” translation by translating phrases available in both cultures or close to source culture on a source oriented basis and “acceptable” translation by prioritizing the target culture while translating phrases not available in target culture. Upon being assessed under preliminary, operational and initial norms, it was found that “The White Castle” was regarded as “adequate” translation. The fact that the translator remained too faithful to source language to do wrong translation proves that “The White Castle” literally seems to be closer to “adequate” translation. At the end of the study, it was recommended that comparative analyses be conducted along with the translations in other languages of the literary work concerned and comments on disparities between the transfer of cultural/linguistic elements be made. Moreover, it is considered that it would make contribution not only to national, but also to international literature by analyzing the translations of other literary works of Orhan Pamuk.
