Abstract
Proverbs, with their concise structure, hold an important place in Arabic oral culture in terms of reflecting the experiences, values, history, and literary aspects of society. The multidimensional structure of proverbs is a situation that arises from various factors influencing their emergence. Depending on the aforementioned diversity, it can be seen that the sources of Arabic proverbs emerged from cultural, literary, and religious factors within a general framework. Within this general framework, the sources of Arabic proverbs will be examined in our article under eight headings: poetry, wisdom, metaphorical and figurative expressions, facts, stories, the Qur'an, and hadith. Among the factors influencing the emergence of Arabic proverbs, facts have shown that proverbs have a historical and social background, while expressions based on poetry, metaphor, and irony reveal the rhetorical foundation of proverbs. while words containing wisdom have given proverbs a profound structure, the Qur'an and hadiths have elevated proverbs to a religious and moral dimension.
The multifaceted nature of Arabic proverbs elevates them beyond being merely a literary product. Indeed, when Arabic proverbs are examined with a focus on their sources; proverbs reveal how events and occurrences are positioned in the social memory; the selective perception in expressions that are wise sayings but transformed into proverbs by the people; the use of literary and aesthetic discourse in everyday popular language; and how religiously referenced expressions are transformed into proverbs, depending on their privileged place in Muslim Arab societies. They thus appear as a social cultural accumulation. In this respect, our study demonstrates with various examples that, in addition to being a literary product, Arabic proverbs are fundamental components that reflect the cultural heritage of Arab society when their sources are taken into account. Furthermore, it is evident that this cultural heritage of Arabic proverbs, along with the field of literature, offers a valuable area of study for the social sciences.
