The Social Approach and Its Role in Second Language Learning Sosyal Yaklaşım ve İkinci Dil Öğrenimindeki Rolü
Main Article Content
Abstract
The social approach is considered one of the most prominent modern trends in second language learning, as it emphasizes the interactive and social dimension of language acquisition, moving beyond traditional views that place the learner in an isolated, individual framework. This article highlights the importance of the social approach in developing learners’ linguistic and cultural competencies through their interaction with the social and linguistic environment, whether in the classroom or the wider community. Drawing on sociolinguistic theories and educational psychology, the article explores how interaction, real-life situations, and collaboration among learners enhance the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. It also reviews educational models based on this approach, such as cooperative learning, task-based learning, and community practice. The findings indicate that integrating the learner into real social contexts increases motivation and enables more natural and effective language use. The article concludes with recommendations for applying the social approach in second language education programs, especially in multicultural environments, to ensure more holistic and human-centered learning.
